What Is the DVLA V62 Form?
The V62 form is the official DVLA application to obtain a replacement V5C logbook (vehicle registration certificate). You need to submit a V62 to DVLA if:
- You bought a car but didn't receive the logbook from the seller
- Your logbook has been lost, stolen, or damaged
- You need to register as the new keeper of a vehicle
- Your vehicle has been rebuilt or significantly altered
Normally, you'd have to download the V62 form from DVLA, fill it in by hand, buy a postal order, and post everything to DVLA Swansea. CarForms does all of that for you.

Do You Need to Submit a V62 Form to DVLA?
The most common reason people submit a V62 form to DVLA is buying a second-hand car where the seller never had the logbook, or lost it before the sale. Without a V5C, you can't prove registered keeper status — which matters for tax, insurance, and eventually selling the car on.
You also need to complete a DVLA V62 application if your existing V5C has been lost, stolen, or damaged beyond use. It's worth doing promptly: driving without a valid logbook doesn't affect your insurance directly, but it can complicate things if you're stopped or need to sell.
In some cases — for example after a major repair, engine replacement, or colour change — you'll need to update your V5C details. The V62 process covers this too.
The standard DVLA fee to process a V62 application is £25. CarForms charges £49.95 all-in, which includes that fee plus our completion, printing, and posting service. No printer, no Post Office, no postal order.
Who Can Apply for a V62 Form?
The V62 application is open to any registered keeper of a vehicle registered in Great Britain. This includes private individuals, sole traders, and company fleet owners. If you have recently purchased a vehicle and the previous keeper did not provide the V5C at the time of sale, you are entitled to apply for a replacement logbook as the new keeper.
To complete your V62 application you will need the vehicle registration number, your name and address as the registered keeper, and the vehicle's make and model. You will also be asked for the date you acquired the vehicle and the name and address of the previous keeper where known. DVLA uses this information to update and reissue the vehicle record. If you do not have all of these details, you can still submit the form but processing may take longer.
There is no requirement to hold a driving licence in order to apply for a replacement V5C. If the vehicle belongs to a company, the application should be made in the name of the company rather than an individual employee. For vehicles registered in Northern Ireland, the process differs slightly as these use a separate vehicle registration system administered by the DVA rather than DVLA.
It is also worth knowing that DVLA does not issue V5C documents for vehicles that are not registered in Great Britain. If your vehicle was originally registered abroad and has recently been imported, you will need to go through the full registration process first rather than submitting a V62.
What Happens After Your V62 is Posted to DVLA?
Once your completed V62 form and payment reach DVLA Swansea, the application is processed by their vehicle registration team. DVLA will check the vehicle record and confirm that the details you have provided match what is held on the central vehicle register. If everything is in order, DVLA will issue a new V5C and post it directly to the address shown on the application. There is no separate collection step and no need to visit a DVLA office or post office.
Processing times vary. In normal circumstances DVLA aims to process V62 applications within four weeks, though during busier periods this can extend to six weeks or more. DVLA does not currently offer a fast-track service for standard V62 applications, so the waiting period is the same regardless of which method you use to submit.
If six weeks pass without receiving your new V5C, DVLA recommends contacting them directly. You can do this via the DVLA website or by calling the DVLA customer helpline. In some cases DVLA may ask for additional verification before processing is completed, particularly if there is an outstanding query on the vehicle record such as an unpaid finance agreement or a discrepancy in the keeper history.
It is important to keep the vehicle taxed and insured throughout the waiting period. The absence of a V5C does not exempt a vehicle from road tax or insurance requirements. You can tax a vehicle using a green new keeper slip if you recently bought it, and your insurer can cover the vehicle based on the registration number even without the logbook in hand.
