What is the ULEZ?

The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is run by Transport for London and covers the whole of Greater London since August 2023. Vehicles that don't meet minimum emission standards pay £12.50/day to drive within it.

What is a Clean Air Zone?

Clean Air Zones (CAZ) operate in cities including Birmingham, Bath, Bristol, Bradford, Newcastle and Sheffield. Like ULEZ, they charge non-compliant vehicles a daily fee — typically £8–£10/day for cars.

ULEZ Compliance by Vehicle Type

Fuel Type Required Standard Typical Registration Date Daily Charge if Non-Compliant
Petrol Euro 4 January 2006 or later £12.50/day
Diesel Euro 6 September 2015 or later £12.50/day
Electric / Hydrogen Always exempt Any £0
Hybrid (petrol) Euro 4 Generally 2006 or later £0 (if compliant)

Frequently Asked Questions

Probably not. Petrol cars need to meet Euro 4 standard, which was mandatory for new registrations from January 2006. Pre-2006 petrol cars generally fail ULEZ. However, some late-2005 vehicles may have been approved to Euro 4 — check the DVLA record above for the exact euroStatus field.
Almost certainly not. Diesel vehicles need Euro 6, which was mandatory from September 2015. Diesels registered before that date are almost always Euro 5 or below and therefore non-compliant with ULEZ.
The ULEZ is a London-specific scheme run by TfL. Other UK cities operate Clean Air Zones (CAZ) with similar emission standards but different daily charges. Birmingham, Bath, Bristol, Bradford, Newcastle and Sheffield all have active CAZs.
The £12.50/day charge applies every day you drive within the ULEZ zone, regardless of how often. If you drive in five days a week, that's £62.50/week or around £3,250/year.
