Frequently Asked Questions
There is no hard rule, but as a general guide: 1–2 previous owners for a car under 5 years old is good. 3–4 owners is average for a 5–10 year old car. More than 4–5 keepers on any car is worth querying — ask the seller why it changed hands so frequently.
The V5C (logbook) is typically issued to each new registered keeper. If the V5C was issued recently on an older vehicle, it usually means the car changed hands recently. If the V5C date is close to the first registration date, the vehicle may have had only one owner from new.
The full keeper history is not available for free. The DVLA holds this data but only releases it to licensed commercial providers like HPI and Experian. You can get a basic indication of keeper changes from the V5C date (shown above), but for the exact count you need a paid check.
Always ask: How long have you owned the car? Do you have the full service history? Has the car been involved in any accidents? Do you have all sets of keys? If possible, verify their answers against an HPI or full history check.
