Frequently Asked Questions

Our free car check shows DVLA vehicle identity (make, model, colour, fuel type, engine size, first registration), current road tax status and renewal date, MOT status and expiry, full MOT test history with failure reasons and advisories, complete mileage history with clocking detection, and outstanding manufacturer recall status.

Yes — 100% free, always. No registration, no subscription, no hidden charges. Data is sourced directly from official DVLA and DVSA government APIs.

Very accurate. The vehicle identity, tax status, and MOT status come directly from the DVLA Vehicle Enquiry Service API. MOT history and mileage readings come from the DVSA MOT History API. Both are official government data sources updated in real time.

Yes. The mileage timeline shows every odometer reading recorded at each DVSA MOT test. If the mileage decreases between any two tests, our system flags it as a possible clocking concern — a clear red warning is shown.

A full HPI or DVLA history check from providers like HPI, Experian, or carwow also includes finance outstanding, insurance write-off markers, and stolen vehicle data from the Police National Computer (PNC). Our free car check covers the government-sourced DVLA and DVSA data — identity, tax, MOT, mileage, and recalls — which is free and official, but does not include finance or write-off data.

If you've found a DVLA record issue — such as a missing or incorrect V5C logbook, a change of keeper, or you need to apply for a replacement V5C — CarForms can help you complete the correct DVLA form (V62 or V5C/2) and post it on your behalf.

What is a car check?

A car check is an instant lookup of a vehicle's recorded history using its UK registration plate. It pulls together data held by the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) and the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) to give you a full picture of a car's past — from its tax and MOT status to every odometer reading ever recorded at an MOT test.

Unlike a paid HPI check, our free car check focuses on official government data: the information the DVLA and DVSA hold about your vehicle. This includes identity details, road tax status, MOT history, mileage, and any outstanding safety recalls — everything a private buyer or owner needs as a first line of defence.

If the car check reveals a problem — such as an expired V5C logbook, a SORN vehicle being driven on the road, or a failed MOT — our related tools and DVLA forms can help you resolve it.

What does a car check show?

Our free car check pulls together six data points in a single report:

  • Vehicle identity — make, model, colour, fuel type, engine size, and date of first registration as recorded by the DVLA.
  • Road tax status — whether the vehicle is currently taxed or declared SORN, and the date tax is due. See the vehicle tax calculator to estimate your renewal cost.
  • MOT status — pass or fail, plus the expiry date of the current MOT certificate. Dig deeper with our MOT history checker.
  • Mileage timeline — a chart of every odometer reading recorded at each MOT test, going back to the vehicle's first test, with automatic clocking detection.
  • Full MOT history — every test result, with individual pass/fail reasons, advisory notices, and mileage at the time of each test.
  • Recall status — whether the DVSA holds an outstanding safety recall against this vehicle. Use our dedicated recall checker for more detail.

All data comes directly from official DVLA and DVSA APIs. Results are as up to date as the government databases allow — typically real-time for tax and MOT status.

Understanding MOT history

The DVSA records every MOT test result going back to 2005, including the test date, mileage, outcome (pass or fail), and the specific reasons for any failure or advisory notice. When you run a car check, you get the complete timeline — not just the most recent result.

Pay attention to advisory notices as well as outright failures. Advisories are items that did not cause a failure at the time but that the tester flagged as likely to require attention soon. A car with the same advisory item appearing across multiple consecutive tests may indicate an owner who is ignoring developing problems.

Our full MOT history check displays the complete test record for any UK vehicle. You can also set up a free MOT reminder so you never miss a renewal date.

Mileage checks and clocking detection

Clocking — winding back a vehicle's odometer to make it appear lower mileage than it really is — is illegal under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations and costs UK buyers hundreds of millions of pounds a year. Because MOT tests record the odometer at the time of testing, the DVSA mileage trail is the most reliable free tool for catching it.

Our car check automatically flags any vehicle where the recorded mileage decreases between tests. If a car shows 98,000 miles at one MOT and 72,000 miles at the next, you'll see a red warning. Even without an explicit flag, look at the mileage graph — a consistent upward slope is what you want; any dip or plateau warrants further questions.

Our standalone mileage check tool provides the same mileage timeline in a focused view if that is all you need.

Road tax status — what it means

Every vehicle driven or parked on a UK public road must be either taxed or declared SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification). The DVLA holds this status in real time and we surface it directly in the car check report.

If a vehicle shows as SORN, it legally cannot be driven on a public road. If you are buying a SORN vehicle, you will need to tax it before driving it away — or arrange to transport it on a trailer. Our SORN checker lets you verify SORN status separately, and the vehicle tax calculator will show you exactly what it will cost to tax before collection.

If the vehicle's V5C logbook is missing or in the wrong name — which is common when tax status is unexpected — a V62 application lets you apply to the DVLA for a replacement logbook.

Safety recall checks

The DVSA maintains a database of outstanding safety recalls issued by manufacturers. When a recall is registered, the manufacturer is required to contact registered keepers — but vehicles change hands, contact details change, and letters go unanswered. Our car check tells you whether the DVSA holds an outstanding recall against the vehicle's registration.

If an outstanding recall is flagged, contact the manufacturer's UK customer care team with the registration number. Recall repairs are carried out free of charge at authorised dealers. Use our dedicated recall checker for more information about specific recalls.

When should you run a car check?

A free car check is useful in several situations:

  • Buying a used car — always check before you hand over money. A mileage discrepancy, recent fail, or outstanding recall can be a deal-breaker or a negotiating point.
  • Selling a car — run the check yourself first so you know exactly what a buyer will find. It builds confidence and avoids surprises.
  • Inheriting or receiving a gifted vehicle — verify the legal status before you drive it. An inherited car may be SORN, untaxed, or have a lapsed MOT.
  • Reporting an abandoned vehicle — a quick check can confirm whether a vehicle on the road near you is SORN, which may support a report to the local authority.
  • Checking your own vehicle — confirm what the DVLA and DVSA hold about your car and catch any discrepancies early.

For a full ownership check — write-off status, outstanding finance, or stolen marker — you will need a paid HPI-style report. Our free check covers official government records only, which is the most reliable starting point before deciding whether a paid check is warranted.
